"What a fantastic day." "Thanks you so much Baby." My master Karen keeps repeating these phrases to Bob. I guess she had a really great time today.
We left about 9:30 and took California 126 to Oxnard to pick up California 1, better known as the Pacific Coast Highway or just PCH. California 126 is designated the Korean War Veterans Highway. Karen's Dad is a veteran of the Korean War. Very fitting we would drive on it. We pass orange and avocado groves, nurseries for all kinds of other trees and acres of other farming on our way to the coast. The road hugs along the foothills of Topatopa Mountains. They are home to the Sespe Condor Sanctuary. We didn't see any, that would have been very cool. After joining PCH in town in Oxnard, we pass Point Mugu Naval Air Station before arriving on the coast.
We start our run of PCH with the top down at Point Mugu State Park. This part of the drive is wonderful just as I pictured it would be. Bob says he expected the ocean to be on the right. So scenic with the mountains right there and the uninterrupted views of the ocean. This is a very special place. The camera can't capture the smile it puts in your heart.
Once we are out of the park, there is more commerce and housing on both sides of the highway. This gets more dense as you head south. It spoils the view and at times totally obstructs it. Guess this is California. We all agree, we'll stay in Vero Beach. But I do like the wind in my hair with the top down. I spy this really funky house. My master said it reminded her of the crazy house she saw with her sisters on her big adventure.
We are going to the Inn of the Seventh Ray for lunch. We head up Topanga Canyon Blvd. One more windy road for Bob. He must really love Karen because I know he really hates driving this kind of road.
Of course I have to stay in the car again while my masters have lunch. It is a pretty spot so I don't mind too much. It does take them longer than usual. I guess they took a look through the gift shops in addition to enjoying their lunch. Bob had a delicious burger and Karen sure enjoyed her curried mussels. They showed me the pictures. They look good but what do I know.
We head back down the canyon road to rejoin PCH. We go south as far as Santa Monica then head back to the hotel. What an experience on the freeway. No need for dinner after such a wonderful lunch, just a nice quiet night together. Good thing, it was a big day and I'm pooped.
