Columbus Nebraska

Tuesday April 17, 2018

It is 30 degrees this morning but no snow, only some frost on the car. We loaded up and headed back out on White Pole Road, aka Route 6, about 8:45. Our guidebook says White Pole Road was Iowa's first certified state road and is the foundation for old Route 6. It runs from Dexter to Adair and is flanked by telephone poles painted white part way up. My master made us stop and take pictures of signage. I can't read them but she was tickled so I added them here for her. I liked the video showing the white poles.

As we passed Lewis, Iowa we saw a sign for "the Hitchcock House". Could it be Alfred Hitchcock? I love when my master stays up and we watch his old TV shows. Turns out it is for a Reverend who used a hidden room in his house to hide slaves as they escaped north. We stopped in Omaha at Smitty's Garage Burgers and Beer. Pretty cool place from what I could see on the outside. My masters really enjoyed their chili and burger. They even thought it was Diners Drive Ins and Dives worthy.

In Lincoln, we turned off 6 at 84th Street to go to my masters aunt Dee's house. They had a great visit while I waited in the car. Karen had not seen her aunt in many many years, longer than an entire dog's life. Way too long. They talked about family and traveling. Dee said we should be sure and see Zion National Park and someday travel the Northwest US and Alaska. Boy would that be another grand adventure. Wonder what byways we would travel? Soon it was time for a selfie and back on the road. We are headed to Abby's house. She lives with my master's Uncle Russ and Aunt Donna in Columbus, Nebraska so we are taking a side trip north.

We arrived about 4:30pm. It was good to see Russ and Donna again. I met them at Cheryl's house a couple years ago. Abby and I ran around in the back yard getting to know each other. She sure likes to run. I'm not used to running free with other dogs so guess I was a little shy. Kevin and Michelle, my master's cousin and his wife, joined us for a wonderful dinner of ribs, potato salad, baked beans and deviled eggs. It sure must have been good. All Abby and I had was kibble. The humans even had Donna's homemade cherry pie and ice cream. Karen better watch out, she won't fit in her pants if she keeps eating like this. We had a whole suite in the basement for the night.   We slept great, warm as bugs in rugs.
