McCook Nebraska

Wednesday April 18, 2018

Woke up around 7. After we packed up and I had my kibble it was upstairs to join Russ, Donna and Abby. I had another outing in the yard with Abby. There was a little snow again. This could be the last time for snow if I had any say in the matter. We enjoyed a run around the yard before heading in. The humans left for Russ and Donna's favorite breakfast spot. They must have had fun judging by all the smilies on their faces. They took pictures but Abby and I weren't included. What's up with that? Then my masters loaded up the car. Darn, I wish we didn't have to go. I think my masters agreed from the sad looks and long hugs before we pulled out.

We headed out US 81 south to connect with Route 6 at Fairmont. There was this cool bridge as we left Columbus. There wasn't much traffic on this part of 6. We took a side trip to Kearney to see the Great Platte River Archway Monument. Russ and Donna recommended we stop. Very cool. It tells the story of the Platte River Road from when it was used by settlers heading west in covered wagons to the modern interstate. My master really liked this old car. It sure has more room than ours!

We had a short detour at Holdrege. Cambridge, Nebraska is a site where many fossils of woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers have been found. As we drove through town, my master spied a sign for the Cambridge Museum. Hoping to see some cool fossils, they turned and went inside. Why don't I ever get to see any of the cool stuff?  The museum has a very extensive and varied collection. My masters did get to see mammoth and even mastodon fossils. No saber-toothed tiger parts. That would be fine by me. Who needs big cats with huge teeth.

We headed on to McCook, Nebraska where we will spend the night. Before going to the hotel, we go to the Harvey P. Sutton house on Norris Ave. it was built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1907-1908. The house has been altered over the years but recent owners have been trying to restore it back to original where they can. You can't miss the Frank Lloyd Wright elements in the architecture; cantilevered roofs and dominate horizontal lines. The design is simple yet very unique and captivating. This house has simple leaded glass windows. The original owners tried too be cost conscious but that is impossible when working with an artist like Wright.

We get checked into the hotel. There is a big field for me to walk around in. Unfortunately I have to be on the leash. I think my days of running free are over for this trip. My masters went to Coppermill Steakhouse had split a delicious prime rib dinner. Nothing beats good corn fed, aged beef. At least I didn't have to smell it, except on their breath. I worked on the blog then turned in. Tomorrow we leave Nebraska and head for the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
