Pine Colorado

Thursday April 19, 2018

It is sunny but cold this morning. Fortunately not much wind so it doesn't feel too bad. No snow but there is frost on the ground and the car. We are back on the road by 8:30 with our eyes peeled for a coffee source for my master. Sure hope we find some soon. We cross over into Mountain Time just before entering the small town of Wauneta, home of Nebraska's Little Grand Canyon. We turn off current Route 6 onto Old 6 in search of the canyon. We find it a short distance north of town. There is a place to park and soak in the site. Who knew this part of the state had canyons. The vegetation reminds me of sagebrush. Bob said he expected a road runner to cross our path. We have been seeing lots of cattle and grain silos along with irrigation equipment. We are still in the heart of farm country.

The Dino Mart in Wauneta has the coffee my master has been looking for, Starbucks black iced coffee unsweetened. She bought both bottles. That will last the morning. Just in time, the ice in her cup was almost melted.

We cross over into Colorado and the topography flattens back out. The road sure is bumpy and the sun is streaming in the back window in my hind quarters - most uncomfortable. The elevation is 4,240 feet in Fleming, Colorado. We must have been gradually climbing because we haven't gone up any hills. A pheasant flew across the road in front of us. We are on a lonely section of Route 6 with only occasional small towns. When we get to Sterling, it feels like a city. Outside of Sterling we are back to the prairie. A tumbleweed even crosses our path. Where's that roadrunner?

We stopped to take a picture of the Historic 6 sign in Hillrose. My master let me come along se we took a selfie too. As we get close to Hudson we can see the Rockies in the distance. It is exciting to begin this part of our trip. So many new things to see.

We successfully navigated through Denver. We drove right past Mile High Stadium. We found our way to the Highland Tavern. Bob picked this place since it had been on DDD. Karen had the boomer sandwich which was featured on the show. Bob had a turkey sandwich. We checked on the hours for Buck Snort Saloon, one of our must see places, since we were planning on going there for dinner. Turns out it is only open Friday to Sunday during the spring. We will go Friday for lunch. We decide to each save half of our sandwich for dinner.

We head for Anchorage Farm Bed and Breakfast. We booked a room here so we would be close to Buck Snort. We arrive a little after 3pm. It looks like a working horse  ranch. We pull in and see a big dog. Lucy puts up a good offense from inside the car. I get out to find where we can check in. The dog is very friendly. I go around the back where I am greeted by the son of the owner who checks us in, gives us the key and shows us our room. It has a small living room in addition to a bedroom and bathroom. It is called the Bird Room and now we know why. There are all kinds of birds everywhere. I added this page to give justice to describing the room.

After unloading, I take Lucy for a walk. The big dog, her name is Bessie, comes up to Lucy and introduces herself. They get along fine. Bessie would play but Lucy isn't up for that. We all take off to find a store. We are looking for ice, beer, carrots and some salad for dinner to go with our leftover sandwiches. Jim recommends the Safeway which is back toward Denver a few miles. We find it without problems. We get all our provisions and head back. After awhile, My master goes out in search of Chris, the owner to find out about breakfast. She sees some deer by one of the riding corrals. She finds Chris in the barn giving a riding lesson and stays to watch and chat with the young girl's mother and Chris. Breakfast is eggs benedict served at 8am. I know my master will really enjoy that. She loves eggs benedict.

It is a quiet evening with dinner whenever you want. We listen to music on the TV since there isn't anything worth watching. I found a great dog cave. Tomorrow we will go to Buck Snort Saloon for lunch. We have reservations at the Georgetown Mountain Inn in Georgetown. It is not far so we will ask Chris for suggestions on where to drive or things to do on the way.
