There was more snow last night so we waited for it to melt off the roads. My master let me out in the backyard while she stayed inside. Don't blame her. It was very windy so felt very cold. I took my time to find just the right spots then came back in, chores done and all by myself.
We said our goodbyes, of course more hugs, and officially restarted our path along Route 6 around 10am. Heading west on 6 we followed the signs for the Grand Army of the Republic Highway through Wilton and West Liberty into Iowa City. As we approached Iowa City we saw signs for Historic Route 6 so we followed them instead of the path described in our guidebook, Stay on Route 6. The book follows the newer replacement highway. My masters were quite proud of themselves for finding and following the original Route 6.
We continued west of Iowa City along the Iowa River again following the path of Historic Route 6. We stopped in Brooklyn, Iowa to see the Community of Flags display. It has flags from all 50 states. My master ran up and snapped photos since it was too cold to do anything else. The rest of us stayed in the nice warm car. In Grinnell, we stopped to let Karen look at the inside of the Jewel Box Bank that is now used as a visitor center. She said it seemed very much like Frank Lloyd Wright. I'm sure she liked it because she always talks about how moving it was to see his house Falling Water in Pennsylvania on the last trip. I posted more about it on this page.
We navigated our way through Des Moines with help from our book and Google maps. In Adel we again picked up Historic Route 6. We reconnected with the book's route in Dexter when we started on White Pole Road. This is a lonely stretch of road as you can see from this video.
My master grumbled about how hard it was to find a hotel in this section of the state. Route 6 goes through very small towns so there aren't many hotels and she had to find one that would let me stay too. She found a nice spot in Stuart, Iowa so that is our destination. We arrived around 4pm. After we were all settled in, my master worked on arranging hotels in Colorado. Bob wants to go to the Buck Snort Saloon so she found a place near there for one night. Then she called the hotel in Georgetown CO to change our arrival and departure dates. We should be all set now.
My master noticed her wedding ring was not on her finger and went into a panic. She looked all over and couldn't find it. Finally, they decided to go to to dinner and look more for the ring later. Ruby's Pub downtown was closed. They went to Johnie's Tap next door and the locals recommended Los Altos. The food and service were good but my master was upset about her ring. When she got back she called Cheryl to have her look at her house. Bob suggested looking in my bag. Karen swore she had already looked there but tried again anyway. Sure enough, there it was. Whew. I was afraid it was going to be a bad night if she didn't find that ring.
